Representation of MIXED FRACTIONS

GAME INFO

Interactive equivalent fractions game containing mixed fractions, in which you have to find the fraction expressed in numerical form that is equivalent to the fraction expressed in graphical form. Drag the fractions that are equivalent, and practice with mixed fractions (click on mixed numbers). What is a mixed fraction? It is the combination of a whole number and a fraction. An excellent educational game on equivalent fractions and fraction representation for elementary and middle school children. Fractions are learned in the math classroom at age 9, and studied with successive, 10 year olds and 11 year olds.

How are mixed fractions represented? Mixed fractions are represented as a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, the mixed fraction "3 1/2" means 3 whole units and 1/2 of an additional unit. To represent mixed fractions, you first divide the numerator (top of the fraction) by the denominator (bottom of the fraction). The whole quotient is placed as the whole number in the mixed representation, and the remainder is placed as the numerator of the fraction, with the same denominator. In the example "3 1/2", the numerator 1 is divided by the denominator 2, resulting in a quotient of 0 and a remainder of 1. This is placed as "3 1/2". Mixed fractions offer a convenient way to represent quantities consisting of whole and fractional parts in a single number.
