GAME INSTRUCTIONS

What is the goal of the game?

In Daily Word Search, students find all the hidden words in a grid of letters. The word list appears above the board. Students can play in 10 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, or Indonesian), which makes it a great fit for both vocabulary practice and world language classes.

Recommended age and educational level

Recommended for students ages 7 and up, from 2nd grade through middle school and beyond. Younger readers can start with short topics such as colors, numbers, or shapes. Older students can take on the Campaign mode or a foreign language.

How to play: single-player or multiplayer

This is a single-player game. It opens in the browser's language, and students can switch languages at any time. There are 4 game modes:
  • Quick Game: a puzzle with a random topic from 35 themes, including animals, sports, weather, jobs, the human body, science, emotions, and more.
  • Daily: a new puzzle every day that tracks the student's daily streak. Progress is saved in the browser, so it works best on the same device.
  • Categories: choose a specific theme, which is ideal for matching a lesson topic.
  • Campaign: an adventure-style path of levels that unlocks new challenges as students complete puzzles.
To select a word, click and drag from the first letter to the last. Words can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and forward or backward. Students get 3 hints per level, but each hint lowers their score.

What do you learn from this game? Learning and skills

  • Vocabulary building: students learn and review theme-based words across many subjects.
  • Spelling: searching letter by letter reinforces correct spelling patterns.
  • Visual scanning: students practice tracking letters in multiple directions.
  • Focus and attention: each puzzle requires sustained concentration.
  • World languages: switching languages introduces key vocabulary in a new language.
  • Persistence: the Daily mode and hint system reward effort and steady habits.

Tips to get the most out of this game

  • For teachers: use the Daily mode as a quick bell ringer or a calm transition activity.
  • Use Categories to match your lesson: weather for science, jobs for social studies, or emotions for SEL.
  • In ESL or Spanish class, have students play the same topic in two languages and compare the words.
  • Encourage students to find words without hints first to earn a higher score.
  • Unplugged challenge: have students create their own word search on grid paper using vocabulary from the current unit, then swap with a classmate.
